A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words

This picture from Joitske Holsebosch’s blog Lasagne and Chips surely explains how I am feeling about putting together my first online course. I may not be as old as this instructor but I definitely relate to all the options available for teaching online today and trying to decide which ones to use when there are new ones almost everyday!

Assessment Activity Plan

Course Name: Loss Prevention

Loss Prevention is a module in the 6 week blended delivery course that combines theory and practice in Store Operations as part of the 6 month Certified Manager Development (CMD) Program for new franchisees at Panago Pizza Inc.

The subject matter contains the policies and procedures needed to effectively report, manage and prevent any loss of funds, assets or inventory in a Panago store.

Learner Characteristics:

  • Varying levels of experience in the foodservice industry
  • Varying levels of business experience
  • Range in age from 21 to mid 50’s
  • 65% male, 35% female
  • Varying levels of education, from high school to university degrees
  • Approximately 40% will be from a professional background
  • At least 40% will be ESL with different levels of English proficiency
  • From diverse cultures
  • Varying levels of technology experience

Learning Objective:

  • Recall the policies and procedures needed to effectively report, manage and prevent any loss of funds, assets or inventory in a Panago store.
  • Practice procedures to manage and prevent any loss of funds, assets and inventory.
  • Evaluate store performance in adherence to loss prevention policies and procedures using the Loss Prevention Audit User Guide and Loss Prevention Audit.

Assessment Strategy:

The purpose of this assignment is to assess your understanding of the loss prevention policies and procedures and evaluate your store’s performance in regards to loss prevention. The assignment has two parts, both which must be completed within 2 weeks. The first part of the assignment is not graded, but the second part will be graded as complete/not complete and must be submitted as part of your portfolio requirements.

Assignment Components:

  1.  Self-Check Exercise:

Complete the fill in the blanks quiz on the course website to test your knowledge of the loss prevention policies and procedures. There is no time limit for the quiz and you are allowed to attempt the quiz multiple times. The outcome of the quiz will prepare you to complete the second assignment component.

2.   Loss Prevention Audit:

Using the Loss Prevention Audit User Guide and the Loss Prevention Audit form conduct an audit on the store in which you are training. Score the audit and create an action plan to address any outstanding issues (maximum of 3). Goals on the action plan need to be SMART. Once complete, upload your completed audit form and action plan so that I can review and provide you with feedback. Also place the completed audit form and action plan in your portfolio that will be submitted prior to certification of the CMD Program.

Rationale:

This is a formative assessment, providing learners with the opportunity to receive feedback prior to the summative assessment for the course.

Part 1 of the assessment is a quiz which draws directly on course content in the fill in the blank questions. This informal self-check exercise will provide immediate feedback to the learners and myself and answer the question of whether they have the foundational knowledge to proceed with the rest of the assignment. The cognitive level for this assessment is Level 1 – Recall.

Part 2 of the assessment is asking the learners to perform an audit on the adherence of the loss prevention policies and procedures in their training store using the Loss Prevention Audit User Guide and Loss Prevention Audit form.  The audit will then be scored by the learner and an action plan created to address any outstanding issues. The cognitive level for this portion of the assessment is Levels 3, 4 and 5 – Application, Analysis and Synthesis as I am asking the learners to apply, evaluate and then create a plan to address the policies and procedures that are not being followed correctly.

Level 2 – Comprehension and Level 3 – Application assessment will also occur during the f2f in-store training as the learners apply and practice the policies and procedures on a daily basis and feedback will be provided by the Store Training Manager during this time.

I have chosen to assess at these levels as franchisees need to not only understand the policies and procedures but be able to train their staff on the policies and procedures, ensure the procedures are adhered to, be able to identify areas of opportunity and be able to correct any deficiencies.  Not being able to perform all of these functions could have financial repercussions for the franchisee and the profitability of their store.
